Footage of the Titan submersible's salvage has been released by the US Coast Guard's Marine Board of Investigation (MBI). A remotely operated vehicle captured the footage on 26 June 2023, but the video was shown 23 September 2024 during a hearing investigating what led to the submersible imploding. The wreckage was recovered and transported to a secure facility for further analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.

The pressure chamber on board OceanGate's 22-ft vessel suffered a'catastrophic implosion', authorities revealed on Thursday, and the men aboard tragically perished. The implosion would have been caused by a sudden change from low to high pressure inside the sub, possibly triggered by a defect in the sub's walls. Experts say the crew and passengers would have been crushed within a fraction of a millisecond, an event so fast it would have been over before they realized what was happening and so violent it's unlikely to leave anything but a mist of human remains. A video posted by James Hambley, a YouTuber who goes by the alias Barded Science Guy, shows a similar implosion happening to a Coke can.

The race against time to find a submersible that disappeared on its way to the Titanic wreckage site entered a new phase of desperation on Thursday morning as the final hours of oxygen possibly left on board the tiny vessel ticked off the clock. The vessel, named Titan, lost communication with tour operators on Sunday while about 700km (435 miles) south of St John's, Newfoundland, during a voyage to the Titanic shipwreck off the coast of Canada. The 6.7-metre-long OceanGate Expeditions vessel began its descent at 8am (12:00 GMT) on Sunday. Considering that it had a 96-hour air supply from the time it is sealed, according to its specifications, the US Coast Guard estimated oxygen in the submersible would have run out at about 10:00 GMT on Thursday. This can vary depending on a few factors, such as whether the sub still has power in the icy depths.

OceanGate says it is an experimental vessel, and when CBS travelled onboard the correspondent had to sign a waiver accepting that it "has not been approved or certified by any regulatory body, and could result in physical injury, disability, emotional trauma or death".
